Typing speed test
Start typing the words in the box: the timer starts with your first letter. Press space after each word.
Your favorites come first on the home page and under the star at the top (in this browser).
The timer starts with the first letter you type.
How WPM is worked out
To compare typing speeds, a word is counted as five characters, spaces included, so long and short words weigh the same. Your speed in words per minute (WPM) is the characters of the words you typed correctly, with their spaces, divided by five and by the minutes of the test.
The raw speed counts everything you typed, right or wrong, the same way. Your accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were the right character: a wrong letter you then delete still counts as a mistake.
How to type the test
Type the highlighted word and press space to go to the next one. While the word is wrong it turns red, and you can fix it with Backspace before pressing space. Once you press space, the word is done: correct words turn green and wrong ones are crossed out. A word left half typed when time runs out doesn't count.
The words are short, everyday ones, in lowercase and without punctuation, and they're shuffled for every test.
Phones and tablets
The test works with an on-screen keyboard. The box asks the browser not to autocorrect or capitalize, but some on-screen keyboards still change words: if that happens, turn off autocorrect on the keyboard itself.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between WPM and raw speed?
WPM only counts the words you typed correctly; the raw speed counts everything you typed. If you make no mistakes, the two are the same.
Why is a word five characters?
It's the usual convention for measuring typing speed: “I run” counts as one word and “rhinoceros” as two. It lets you compare texts with words of different lengths.
Can I go back to a previous word?
No: once you press space, that word is finished. You can correct the word you're typing as much as you like.
Is my best result saved?
Yes, in your own browser, one for each test length. It isn't sent anywhere.
